Rough skin is not always an exfoliation problem. Hydration, lipids and circulation change how skin feels, often faster than another acid does.
When someone tells me their skin feels rough or looks uneven, my first instinct is not always to exfoliate. We have become so focused on acids and resurfacing that we forget there are other ways to improve how skin looks and feels.
Three ways to softer skin
Hydrate the skin
Dehydrated skin almost always looks more textured. Properly hydrated skin looks plumper and smoother, and fine lines and roughness become less noticeable. I am a believer in layering hydration rather than assuming every texture issue needs an acid.
Support the barrier
A healthy barrier is essential to healthy looking skin. When it is compromised, skin becomes dry, rough, flaky and far more reactive. Ceramides, lipids and fatty acids make a real difference in the way skin feels.
Improve circulation and stimulate the tissue
Skin health is not only about products. Facial massage, lymphatic technique and tools that stimulate the tissue improve circulation and create a smoother, more toned appearance.
One of my favorite ways to improve the look and feel of texture is a good mask. A mask gives you a concentrated treatment moment without adding another daily active to the routine.
Softer skin is not always about taking more away. Often it is about giving the skin more.
My texture treatments from THE LA FACIALIST

The all rounder
Tri Bio-Botanical Revival Masque
One of my favorite masks for the overall look and feel of the skin. It smooths texture, boosts radiance and improves the appearance of firmness in a single treatment.

Texture from dryness
Lipid Recovery Mask
The one I reach for when texture is coming from dryness, sensitivity or a compromised barrier. It calms, hydrates and supports rather than stripping the skin further. It also comes cut for the eyes and for the neck and décolleté.

Nourishing and soothing
Mānuka Honey Mask
A beautiful option when skin needs hydration, nourishment and calm. I love this when someone wants softer, more supple skin without another aggressive exfoliating treatment.

Hydration with gentle refinement
Hydrating Clay Masque
Kaolin with vitamin E and panthenol. It works as a hydrating treatment or as a gentle micro exfoliant, which makes it unusually flexible for the price.

Immediate plump and glow
CO2LIFT® PRO
One of my favorite treatments when I want that immediate fresh, plump, smooth effect. Carboxy technology encourages circulation and oxygenation while improving the appearance of dullness and uneven texture. This is one of those treatments that makes skin look noticeably more alive.

The daily version
CO2Lift® Skin Mousse Carboxy Moisturizer
Another good option when skin needs radiance and overall quality. I love the carboxy treatments because they are not about removing dead skin. They are about stimulating the skin and improving how it looks and feels.

Texture with dullness
Extra Strength Active Peel Brightening System
The treatment when uneven texture arrives alongside dullness or discoloration. Exfoliating acids with antioxidants and botanicals resurface and reveal a smoother, brighter complexion.

Texture without another acid
Mystro Active Balance Serum
I love Mystro when skin looks stressed, uneven or out of balance. It supports the skin's response to environmental stress while improving the appearance of redness, texture and overall quality. A good example of addressing texture without simply adding another exfoliating step.
And do not forget the body
We obsess over facial texture and completely neglect the body. Your body needs regular attention too, particularly as cellular turnover slows with age.

The ritual
Body Plane Set
One of my favorite body rituals for instantly softer, smoother skin. It lifts dry skin and impurities while you work the body with oil, and I love the massage component, because you are encouraging circulation at the same time.

Smoother body skin over time
EssentiA Body Kit
Probably my favorite recommendation if the goal is genuinely smoother body skin over time. Derma-Lac Lotion with the Vitamin A, C and E Body Oil, which together work on texture, tone, hydration and overall skin quality.
For me, softer skin is not always about taking more away. Sometimes it is about giving the skin more hydration, more lipids, more nourishment and more circulation. That is when you start to see genuinely healthy, smooth texture. Everything chosen for this concern sits together on the Uneven Texture page, and the full mask edit is here.
