Sun damage and collagen loss get the attention. Glycation works quietly, from the inside, and it is the process that decides how well collagen holds up over time.
In skin health we talk a great deal about sun damage, collagen loss and inflammation. There is another, quieter process happening beneath the surface that accelerates aging from the inside out.
If you care about skin longevity, collagen preservation and holding firmness over time, glycation is the process to understand.
What glycation is
Glycation is a natural chemical reaction that occurs when sugar molecules bind to proteins or fats in the body without the help of enzymes. When sugar attaches to structural proteins such as collagen and elastin, it forms compounds called Advanced Glycation End Products, or AGEs. The closest everyday comparison is caramelization, happening inside the skin.
These AGEs stiffen and weaken collagen fibers, leaving them less flexible and more brittle. Over time that changes the structure and the resilience of the skin itself.
Why glycation ages the skin
Collagen is meant to be strong and supple at the same time. When glycation takes hold:
- Collagen becomes rigid and inflexible
- Elastin loses its bounce
- Skin appears dull and uneven
- Fine lines deepen faster
- Sagging becomes more noticeable
Unlike temporary dehydration or surface dullness, glycation affects the structural proteins that keep skin firm. Once collagen is glycated, the damage is very difficult to reverse.
You do not feel glycation happening. You see it later, in texture, in tone, and in laxity.
What causes glycation
Glycation is part of aging. Certain things accelerate it.
High sugar intake
Frequent spikes in blood sugar increase the likelihood of sugar binding to collagen.
Processed foods
Highly processed carbohydrates convert quickly into glucose, which fuels glycation.
Grilled and fried foods
Food cooked at high temperatures already contains AGEs, which add to overall oxidative stress.
Chronic stress and inflammation
Elevated cortisol and systemic inflammation worsen glycation damage.
Signs glycation may be affecting your skin
- Skin that looks prematurely crepey
- Loss of elasticity despite good topical care
- Persistent dullness
- Deepening nasolabial folds or marionette lines
- A yellowish cast to the skin over time
Glycated collagen often takes on a slightly sallow appearance, which subtly shifts the whole complexion.
How to protect your skin from glycation
Glycation cannot be eliminated. It can be slowed considerably.
One. Stabilize blood sugar
Balanced meals built on protein, fiber and healthy fats reduce glucose spikes. Avoiding constant grazing on refined carbohydrates is one of the most powerful anti-aging strategies most people overlook.
Two. Support collagen with smart topicals
Antioxidants defend against the oxidative stress that compounds glycation damage. Vitamin C in particular supports collagen integrity. In clinical practice I focus heavily on antioxidant layering and barrier support. Medical grade lines such as iS Clinical build antioxidant rich formulations that help protect against the environmental and oxidative stressors behind premature aging.

The antioxidant layer
Alto Advanced Defense and Repair Serum
The most complete antioxidant system on my shelf. Carnosine sits alongside vitamins C and E, green tea and grape seed extracts, superoxide dismutase and CoQ10, which is exactly the combination glycation calls for.
Three. Consider anti glycation ingredients
Several ingredients are worth attention when it comes to supporting skin against glycation and oxidative stress. Carnosine, alpha lipoic acid, green tea extract and resveratrol have all been studied for their antioxidant properties and their potential role in supporting healthy collagen. These are the products I carry at THE LA FACIALIST that contain them.

These are not the only tools I use for skin longevity, but they are the ingredients I find most interesting when the conversation turns to protecting collagen, managing oxidative stress, and being proactive about how our skin ages.
Four. Protect against UV damage
Ultraviolet exposure increases oxidative stress, which worsens AGE formation. Daily SPF is not negotiable for anyone serious about collagen longevity.
The bigger picture: longevity skin
Glycation is where internal health and external aging meet. You cannot out treat a lifestyle that constantly spikes blood sugar. Real skin longevity comes from mindful eating, potent skincare and consistent sun protection working together. Understanding glycation is what allows you to make the choices that keep skin firm, luminous and resilient well into the future.
One more thing I have added to my routine
This is also why I have added BioRewind from skinbetter science to my routine. What I find interesting about it is that it addresses something skincare alone cannot reach, which is what is happening inside the body.
BioRewind uses skinbetter's proprietary CORExtract, a rosemary leaf extract containing rosmarinic acid and other antioxidant compounds that have been studied for their role in glycation. Glycation is one of those processes that happens quietly over time and has a very real impact on the way skin ages, particularly when it comes to collagen, firmness and elasticity.
I also like that the formula addresses systemic inflammation, because inflammation plays such a major role in the aging process. We tend to think of inflammation as temporary. Something is irritated, and then it settles. Chronic inflammation is a much bigger picture. It affects the body as a whole, and our skin is absolutely part of that picture. I am especially interested in it because chronic systemic inflammation is a common thread in so many chronic diseases and is deeply connected to how aging shows up in the skin.

In my routine now
BioRewind Skin Health Dietary Supplement
CORExtract rosemary leaf extract, studied for its role in glycation, in a formula that also addresses systemic inflammation. The part of skin longevity that topicals cannot reach.
For me, BioRewind fits the way I think about skin longevity overall. Do not only chase the signs of aging once they appear. Pay attention to the processes happening underneath them. Good skincare matters, and so does supporting your skin from the inside out.
